- Purpose
- The purpose of this policy is to establish clear guidelines on flying flags at NSCC campuses to ensure a consistent standard across the College.
- This policy follows the National Flag of Canada Etiquette provided by Canadian Heritage Services.
- Scope
- This policy applies to all campuses and includes flags flown externally on flagpoles and flag displays (if applicable) inside buildings.

- Flagpoles
- The Canadian, Nova Scotian, Mi’Kmaq or NSCC flags will be flown on campus flagpoles.
- Other flags may be flown temporarily in order to recognize special events or months of the year. These flags should replace existing flags in this order:
- NSCC flag
- Canadian flag
- Nova Scotian flag
- The placement of flags must follow the National Flag of Canada Etiquette.
- Half Mast
NSCC will fly flags at half-mast:- At all campuses upon the direction of the federal or provincial government, the Mi’kmaq Assembly of Chiefs, or the President or Executive Team of NSCC.
- At individual campuses upon the direction of the Campus Principal or Vice President, Campus & Communities.
The College and/or campus must share the rationale for the half-masting through social media channels, email and/or Connect. The Manager of External Relations will work with Executive and/or Principals to determine most appropriate channels. - Recognized Flags in Flag Displays
Only official flags of countries recognized by the United Nations can be displayed in a campus’ flag display.
