The Nautical Institute is part of the Strait Area Campus. Students train on land and in the waters of the Strait of Canso.
Fire School
The inside of the facility is specially designed to resemble different areas of a ship. All cadets graduate with the advanced skills needed to fight a fire at sea.
Marine Engineering Technology
Marine engineering cadets spend part of their program learning with simulators, like this one modelling a ship’s engine.
Marine Navigation Technology
Simulators are also used by navigation cadets. This one can simulate any port in the world and weather conditions.
Training at Sea
Students spend their summers at sea on internships in Canada and abroad, earning the sea time required by Transport Canada.
Start a career
The 28-week Bridge Watch Rating program provides training needed to be a deckhand.
Ship's Cook
Ship cooks are in demand. This culinary concentration trains students for a cooking career at sea.
Emergency training
When working at sea, everyone must be prepared for an emergency. Cadets receive rigorous safety training as part of their program.
