From student to small business success
In 2007, after graduating from NSCC’s Applied Communication Arts program, followed by Photography in 2009 and Graphic Design in 2011, one ambitious entrepreneur returned to NSCC in 2023 for the Start-Up Accelerator program. Now, with the support of the Scotiabank Entrepreneur in the Making (EITM) program, Sydney Daoust’s taking Syd Delicious, her vegan baking business, to the next level, proving that the right guidance and funding can make all the difference.
Funding that fuels growth
The EITM program funding is helping Sydney expand. She’s using it to cover the costs of printing eco-friendly packaging and purchasing a new vacuum sealer machine. This investment is enhancing her business’s efficiency and sustainability.
“I’m really excited about switching everything over to recyclable packaging,” she says. We already stand out by only offering delicious vegan treats, and becoming even more sustainable will set us apart even further in a competitive market.”
Mentorship that guides success
The guidance and mentorship provided through EITM has been invaluable. “Something I was really on the fence about with my business was whether I should focus my energies on wholesale or opening a storefront. After speaking with different mentors and people in the business, I decided it was best for me to really dive into wholesale and get into more stores.”
The program’s mentorship not only helped her make a crucial business decision but also gave her insights into keeping organized, applying for HST, and thinking like a business owner versus an employee.
Looking to the future
The EITM program has been a catalyst for long-term success, helping this entrepreneur develop the mindset needed to thrive in the business world. "It’s given me knowledge I never would’ve had otherwise," she says. "Everything from choosing the right equipment to managing my time more effectively."
When asked about the impact of the program, she sums it up perfectly, "The grant is just a small part of it. Everyone involved in the program has been so generous with their time, expertise and guidance. I can’t express enough gratitude for the kindness and support I’ve received."
