About the Position

We're looking for March Break Camp Counselors

Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency's Skilled Trade Camps provide hands-on experiences for youth in grades 7 through 9 across the province to discover skilled trades. Youth explore a new trade each day through faculty led workshops in a variety of trade areas.  

As a Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for supervising campers while they attend faculty led workshops. You'll be facilitating teambuilding activities and creating a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all participants. You will work closely with other staff to ensure that camp programs run smoothly, and campers have a memorable and enriching experience.

Location: NSCC Pictou Campus

Duration: Start date March 3rd, end date March 14th

March 3-7: approximately 10 hours of training, in afternoon and evenings. March 10-14: Monday-Friday, 40 hours.

Compensation: $15.20-$17.00 based on qualifications and previous experience

Key Responsibilities:

Camper Supervision:

  • Supervise campers at all times; ensuring their safety and well-being during skilled trade workshops, camp activities, lunch and free time.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and be a role model for campers. Assist with camper behavior management in a constructive manner.
  • Liaison with parents and guardians during camper drop off & pick up.

Camp Facilitation:

  • Lead and participate in camp teambuilding activities.
  • Encourage participation, and teamwork in all activities and workshops.

Health and Safety:

  • Monitor campers for any signs of illness, injury, or distress, and report concerns to leadership should they arise.
  • Follow NSCC safety policies and procedures and ensure campers are adhering to camp rules and guidelines.

Communication:

  • Build strong, positive relationships with campers to create a supportive environment.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, camp staff, faculty and leadership regarding camper needs, progress, and concerns.
  • Provide feedback to the camp leadership on camper behavior and program success.

Leadership & Teamwork:

  • Work collaboratively with fellow counselors and camp staff to provide a positive camp experience.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, camp workshops and activities.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Previous experience working with children in a recreational, educational, or childcare setting is preferred but not required.
  • Skilled trade, and OH&S experience are considered an asset.

Skills:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Patience, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
  • Leadership potential and the ability to motivate and guide campers.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to participate in physical activities, such as changing tires, using basic hand tools, using power drills, etc.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment (up to 15 pounds) as needed.
  • Comfort with working in skilled trade shops.

Additional Information:

  • Successful candidates must provide a clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check. NSCC will reimburse the successful candidate for the cost of the checks.
  • Mandatory camp training will take place 2-3 afternoons or evenings in the week of March 3-7th.
  • The successful candidates must be available for training.
