About the Position

The primary goal of this job is to a build a team that focuses on empowering youth with an entrepreneurial mindset to meet the day-to-day demands of this eco-tourism operation on the Halifax Boardwalk.

Goals include the supervision and assistance in the successful fulfillment of bike rental and tour orders and reservations from start to finish.

You'll do this in a way that maximizes client satisfaction while creating a diverse, team-oriented, safe, and supportive environment for all team members. You'll also ensure the proper care of our bike inventory and day-to-day store operations on the very busy Halifax Boardwalk.

Hours: 35 to 40 hrs per week (option for 4-Day work week - 36 hrs)



Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a safe & engaging work environment for all youth regardless of race, creed or those facing visible or invisible disabilities by constantly implementing, evaluating, and evolving best practices
  • Create a supportive and encouraging environment that encourages all team members to embrace failure as a learning opportunity
  • Optimize day-to-day operations to ensure operational excellence and efficiency. This includes delegating tasks such as prepping bike reservations, addressing out-of-order bikes, coordinating staff breaks, scheduling bike maintenance, or coordinating tour departures.
  • Provide ongoing training and feedback to staff
  • Evaluate and introduce new systems to meet the goals of operational excellence, team engagement and diversity, onsite safety, and customer satisfaction
  • Utilize technology to track rental equipment, manage reservations, and communicate effectively
  • Identify opportunities for new technologies that reduce errors, assist in repetitive tasks, and meet business objectives
  • Listen actively to staff and customers, working to incorporate feedback into operational standards and guidelines
  • Option to give guided tours

Qualifications

- Preferably post-secondary students studying tourism, commerce, management, sustainability, entrepreneurship, or another related field

- Experience in a supervisor role is considered an asset

- Effective leader with the ability to delegate tasks, motivate, and lead by example

- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken

- French or another spoken language is considered an asset

- Interest in bike maintenance and bicycling; bike maintenance experience will be considered a plus

- Enjoy working outdoors in a fast paced environment; prepared to work in a variety of outdoor conditions included heat, rain and more cold temperatures on the shoulder season (May & October)

- Self-starter

- Active, energetic individual

- Ability to work independently or in a group

- The successful candidate will complete a 30 day on-the-job bike maintenance training program

Co-op Position Eligibility Criteria 

To be considered for this co-op position, applicants must meet the following criteria: 

Enrollment Status: Must be a current NSCC student in good academic standing and returning to your program for classes in the Fall. Graduating students are not eligible for co-op.  

Academic Continuity:?Must be returning to your current program for full-time study in the Fall Term.

International Students Permit Requirement: International students must possess a valid co-op work permit from the Government of Canada with no restrictions that would prevent them from engaging in the described co-op work. 

Tuition Requirement: The co-op course is an elective first-year course in your program that occurs in the Spring/Summer semester. There is a tuition fee for this course. 

Approval Requirement: All co-op experiences must be approved by your faculty or Academic Chair and sent to workexperience@nscc.ca?in order to receive credit towards your NSCC credential. Please check in with your Faculty Advisor before accepting any job offer.
