We are seeking an Occupational Health and Safety Student, for our Atlantic Canada district in Dartmouth, NS, within our Canadian Buildings Division that is available for 4 months starting in May 2025.

As an Occupational Health and Safety Student and depending on your assigned project, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our team by:

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) Professional with inspections and incidental investigations
  • Managing documents (ie. data entry, SMC entries, taking minutes, filing etc.)
  • Assisting with the orientation of new employees
  • Developing of training materials
  • Reviewing paperwork (ie. PSI, tailgate meetings, safework procedures, trend analysis)
  • Monitoring and maintaining the environmental program
  • Recognizing and following PCL and local legislative requirements
  • Analyzing site-specific trends and incidents and reporting findings to district
  • Gathering/reviewing/distributing safety-related statistical information
  • Interpreting, communicating, and reinforcing project safety standards to workforce

Co-op Position Eligibility Criteria:


To be considered for this co-op position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Enrollment Status: Must be a current NSCC student in good academic standing and returning to your program for classes in the Fall. Graduating students are not eligible for co-op.  

Academic Continuity: Must be returning to your current program for full-time study in the Fall 2025 Term.

International Students Permit Requirement: International students must possess a valid co-op work permit from the Government of Canada with no restrictions that would prevent them from engaging in the described co-op work.

Tuition Requirement: The co-op course is an elective first-year course in your program that occurs in the Spring/Summer semester. There is a tuition fee for this course.

Approval Requirement: All co-op experiences must be approved by your faculty or Academic Chair and sent to workexperience@nscc.ca?in order to receive credit towards your NSCC credential. Please check in with your Faculty Advisor before accepting any job offer.

Qualifications

 

  • Ability to implement HSE program elements and safe operating procedures
  • Knowledge of environmental requirements and the ability to implement systems which meet compliance
  • Ability to plan and employ preventative measures to reduce the risks of exposure to hazards
  • The ability to determine the cause of an incident, and to initiate and implement corrective action to prevent the likelihood of reoccurrence
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong willingness to learn
