We are currently looking for a Gas Turbine Operator/Technician to join our Power Production in a permanent position. Reporting to the Combustion Turbines Superintendent, you will be responsible for performing routine mechanical, electrical, controls, and instrumentation maintenance, repair and troubleshooting on Pratt & Whitney, General Electric Gas Turbines and Auxiliaries within the Province.

As a Gas Turbine Operator/Technician:

  • You will work effectively as a member of the Gas Turbine Work Team and be capable of performing in a self-directed manner.
  • You will be an integral member of Nova Scotia Power’s Team, working closely with the Energy Control Center, Regional Operations, other Power Generation groups, and various contractors and as well support all ISO 14001 processes and initiatives.
  • On occasion, you may be required to go on site to address any mechanical or controls issues after hours.
  • Successful candidates will be assigned a starting Apprenticeship level based on experience and skill set.
  • You will be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province. You will be responsible for personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Safe Work Practices.
  • You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.
  • It is the responsibility of the Gas Turbine Operator Technician to ensure that NSPI is in compliance with all NERC/NPCC reliability standards related to Power Production. 

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure. 

Your primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of the Tusket Hydro Station, and you will be required to take on call rotation and work other than normal hours and/or in extreme conditions. You will have 90 days to provide proof of primary residence.

Qualifications

These skills will make you successful:

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below: 

  • You must have a Grade XII education or equivalent. In addition, you must have one of the following:
    • Certificate in Industrial Instrumentation Tech OR
    • BA. Engineering and Technology (Instrumentation and Controls).
  • Candidates must have a good knowledge on Gas Turbine Engines and its operations.
  • You must have a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in an industrial setting.
  • Good knowledge of a gas turbine would be an asset. You possess the skills to provide mentorship and coaching to others. You have strong oral and written communication skills and interact well with others, as well as demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • You have strong computer skills and can deal with multiple tasks and often changing demands.  
  • You are self-motivated, adaptable to change and willing to work to contribute to the team environment and workplace.
  • You must possess a valid passport for air travel outside of Canada if required.
  • You must be willing to travel if required within and outside of Canada for business. The successful candidate must possess a valid Nova Scotia driver´s license with a minimum of two years driving experience.

If no qualified candidates apply, consideration will be given to applicants who have significant experience on Gas Turbines engines. These Candidates will be considered Apprentice Gas Turbine Operator Technicians and will be responsible to complete an apprenticeship program within Nova Scotia Power.
