About the Position

This position is primarily responsible for the layout and assembly of steel parts and pieces in accordance with drawings, utilizing flux and metal core welding processes. The challenge of this position is to ensure the quality of work is in accordance with applicable procedures and industry standards, while maintaining safety awareness in a time sensitive work environment often with conflicting deadlines. The dayshift position works Monday through Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:30 pm, and 7:00amto 3:30pm on Friday. The night shift position works Monday through Thursday 4:30pm to3:30am. This position works under the supervision of the Production Foreman. Overtime does occur and when required it is a condition of continued employment. Travel is infrequent and of a local nature only.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

1. STEEL HANDLING

On a weekly basis:

  • Identify where the steel is located for assembly.
  • Retrieves steel from the beam line or yard or assembly.
  • Analyzes drawings and verifies if steel will accommodate the job.
  • Lays/ set out steel and fit it together as per drawings and/ or documentation.
  • Utilizes hydraulic punch, core drills, jib cranes, forklift, saw, mag drills, etc. as necessary.
  • Completes detailed check once steel is on the bench and drawings are retrieved to ensure no detail is missing.
  • If there are any details missing and bring it to the attention of the head of the department.
  • Grind burs for smoothness and cosmetics to ensure that clips can be placed properly, is the proper fit, and square ends when necessary.
  • Measure lines, square necessary marks, pick up holes according to drawings where necessary.
  • Put details on items and tack in place, then check measurements to ensure accuracy of placement.
  • Places job number and piece number on structure at proper spot according to drawing specifications.
  • Mark the center line or identify center of balance and mark accordingly.
  • View blueprints to identify where welding points are and weld according to size and drawing specs.
  • Ensures the proper drain holes are placed for galvanizing purposes.
  • Place products in a safe and organized fashion so piece numbers may be easily seen by loaders.

2. SAFETY AWARENESS

On a weekly basis:

  • Attend weekly toolbox meetings.
  • Keeps the work area clean and orderly.
  • Inform the supervisors of any physical impairment, health or safety concerns that may put them at risk when assigned to a certain task.
  • Removes defective tools and equipment from service and reports it to their supervisor.

Qualifications

Completion of High School, Block I (Metal Fabrication) or Level C (Welding), or equivalent training and/or experience.

Due to limited experience and training, apprentices may or may not be responsible for all of the above-mentioned at the supervisors’ discretion.

A valid driver’s license is required. We are not on a bus route so reliable transportation is required. 

 Professional / Technical knowledge: Metal Fabrication, Steel Fitting, Welding, Proper use of PPE, FCAW, MCAW, GTAW & SMAW, Angle grinder, Plasma cutter, Cambering machine, Ironworker, Overhead crane, Forklift, Tablet

Co-op Position Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for this co-op position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Enrollment Status: Must be a current NSCC student in good academic standing and returning to your program for classes in the Fall. Graduating students are not eligible for co-op. 

2. Academic Continuity: Must be returning to your current program for full-time study in the Fall Term.

4. International Students Permit Requirement: International students must possess a valid co-op work permit from the Government of Canada with no restrictions that would prevent them from engaging in the described co-op work

5. Tuition Requirement: The co-op course is an elective first-year course in your program that occurs in the Spring/Summer semester. There is a tuition fee for this course.

6. Approval Requirement: All co-op experiences must be approved by your faculty or Academic Chair and sent to workexperience@nscc.ca in order to receive credit towards your NSCC credential. Please check in with your Faculty Advisor before accepting any job offer.
