Overview

The Accounting concentration builds on the accounting skills and business knowledge developed in your first year. Whether your goal is to work within an existing organization or start your own company, this concentration gives you the confidence to start your career.

In this concentration, you:

  • Learn computerized accounting.
  • Analyze numbers in a way that will enable you to make strategic business recommendations.
  • Expand your knowledge around corporate accounting, manufacturing accounting, partnership accounting and the tax implications for different types of businesses.
  • Develop your foundational learning around business processes through the capstone project.

Work experience

  • You have a choice between field experience or an international learning project to achieve this mandatory credit.
    • Field experience provides the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills outside the classroom.
    • Opportunities are typically unpaid and last approximately 5 weeks.
  • International learning projects are considered a work-integrated learning option and provide you with the opportunity to gain international learning and experience. You apply for international learning projects through NSCC International. Successful candidates are offered the opportunity to participate in a learning program hosted by international partners in various host countries. 
    • There are additional fees to participate in an international learning project.
    • You’re required to complete a pre-departure preparation course (INTE 1000), travel to the host country and actively participate in project work and cultural experiences.

  • First-year courses are in-person at your home campus. Second-year courses are a combination of:
    • In person at your home campus
    • Accounting-specific courses delivered as scheduled online courses with students from the other campuses

If you're interested in furthering your studies in accounting after graduation, you may be eligible to receive advanced standing in programs offered by other post-secondary institutions and professional associations.

Admission requirements

  • Successful completion of Business Administration – Year 1 (including ACTG2000 Financial Accounting II elective) or advanced standing.
  • Advanced standing – To be considered, you must apply to and meet the admission requirements for the Business Administration program. Advanced standing is based on academic credits (certificate/diploma/degree) completed from a recognized public institution within the past 10 years that meet the academic requirements of the full first year of the program. Advanced standing is subject to seat availability.

  • Portfolio development – As part of your studies at NSCC, you develop a portfolio of your work; the portfolio captures your achievements and profiles your skills to employers.

Tuition amounts are for the 2024-25 academic year. Program costs and fees (textbooks, supplies, etc.) are additional.

Tuition for part-time study is calculated on a per-course basis and is paid at the beginning of each term.

In addition to annual tuition, there are program costs (books, tools, etc.) and student fees for College services, health and dental plans, your student association and parking.

ACTG 2010 - Computerized Accounting I
This course is designed to provide practical applications of accounting principles and procedures using a basic integrated accounting software package. Students will process transactions using the general, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and payroll modules. Students will also use financial statements and other reports to provide accurate financial information to supervisors. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). This course is accepted as a pre-requisite for the Canadian Professional Accountant Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CPA – ACAF) program.

ACTG 2200 - Payroll Administration
This course provides students with a working understanding of Canadian Federal and Provincial payroll compliance legislation. Specifically, students will learn how to accurately calculate and record all aspects of typical payroll transactions including taxable allowance benefits and end-of-employment payments.

ACTG 3001 - Managerial Accounting
The study of Managerial Accounting will help the student to identify and evaluate information to aid managers in planning, controlling, and decision-making. Upon completion of the course, students will have demonstrated the ability to apply the main concepts and practices of management accounting. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). This course is accepted as a pre-requisite for the Canadian Professional Accountant Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CPA – ACAF) program.

ACTG 3002 - Taxation
Taxation is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of the Income Tax Act. Focus is placed on fundamental taxation concepts and the legislative intent of the tax rules. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). This course is accepted as a pre-requisite for the Canadian Professional Accountant Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CPA – ACAF) program.

ACTG 3003 - Financial Accounting III
This course expands on the topics covered in Financial Accounting I and II, and focuses on corporations, partnerships, investments, liabilities and the expansion of financial statement reporting. This course is required for students pursuing a Business Administration concentration in Accounting. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB). This course is accepted as a pre-requisite for the Canadian Professional Accountant Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CPA – ACAF) program.

ACTG 3010 - Computerized Accounting II
The course is designed to provide the learner the ability to design and implement an integrated computerized financial system that provides timely and financial and managerial reports. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB).

ACTG 4005 - Accounting Practicum
This course encompasses the learning from prior accounting courses and builds upon them to provide hands-on, practical application of business knowledge. Students will use appropriate technology and research to complete a comprehensive accounting case study. This course is accepted toward certification with the Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping (CIB).

ACTG 4995 - Work Experience
The work experience component provides the learner with an opportunity to apply new skills and concepts appropriate for entry-level positions within the occupation. Learners will assess their own performance and be evaluated by an industry partner. Learners will identify personal outcomes they wish to attain during the work experience and will keep a journal. This is a course of 175 hours spread over five weeks.

COMP 3050 - Business Computer Applications III
This course furthers the skills obtained in COMP 1050. By the end of the course, you will be able to create advanced queries, forms and reports to enhance databases, as well as import and export data to increase efficiency. And finally, you will explore and integrate various business computer applications to address a variety of business needs by analyzing business scenarios to inform effective decision making.

FINA 3010 - Corporate Finance I
The language of finance flows logically from accounting, building upon the concepts of ratio analysis and financial statement interpretation, as well as the compilation of statistical data. This course is an introduction to finance, exposing the student to the application of management theories and procedures related to financial data analyses, financial forecasting, working capital management, and capital markets. This course is accepted as a pre-requisite for the Canadian Professional Accountant Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (CPA – ACAF) program.

LEGL 2000 - Business Law
This course provides the student with an introduction to the Canadian legal system and a basic understanding of contract and tort law as these apply to the world of business.

MATH 3001 - Business Statistics
This statistics course will provide learners with a fundamental understanding of data collection, analysis and presentation. Learners will use statistical techniques in order to collect and analyze data and present meaningful information to assist in business decision making, resource management and marketing.

Prescribed elective course requirement. 4 credits.
