  1. Purpose
    1. To communicate the various methods by which a person can report safety concerns to the College so corrective action can be taken.

    1. This applies to all NSCC employees, students, visitors and contractors.
  1. Procedure
    1. Responsibilities
      1. Any person who observes a potential or actual hazard or has a general safety concern has a duty to take reasonable action to prevent an accident from occurring. In many situations the reasonable action is to report the condition or concern so corrective action can be initiated.
      2. As a best practice, and under protection of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, there will be no reprisal for reporting safety concerns.
    2. How to Report a Safety Concern
      1. As per the Occupational Health & Safety Act employees shall immediately report safety concerns to their immediate supervisor. Where the matter has not remedied to the satisfaction of the employee, they may report to the Joint Occupational Safety & Health (JOSH) Committee or representative.
      2. If there is a safety concern, it is usually best to report the concern directly to the person who can correct the condition if known. If unsure about who should be advised of a concern, it is always best to report concerns to your immediate supervisor.
      3. Each campus maintains an active OHS Committee where safety concerns can be reported. The names and contact numbers of the campus membership are posted on the Safety Information Station within the campus.
      4. Matters regarding campus buildings, infrastructure and grounds may reported to the campus Facilities Management. This can be accomplished by clicking on the “Facilities Management” work request icon on your workstation desktop.
      5. Safety concerns may be reported at any time directly to .
      6. Students shall report safety concerns to their faculty. In absence of faculty, students may report safety concerns to Student Services or campus security.
      7. Visitors and contractors shall report safety concerns to the NSCC employee most closely associated with their business or campus security.
      8. In certain cases, Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education may be contacted and advised of a safety concern.
