NSCC students and alum lead Team NS at Skills Canada National Competition

Throughout May 29 – June 1, Team Nova Scotia, comprised of 42 top students and apprentices across the province, competed in the 2024 Skills Canada National Competition in Quebec City. The competition is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in Canada. Team Nova Scotia proudly returned home with 15 medals: 6 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze.

Of the 15 medals, 8 were awarded to NSCC students and alumni who won in their division:

Gold

  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning - Derek Lewis, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning ‘21
  • Sprinkler Fitter - Tyler Hayes, Pipe Trades ‘19
  • Precision Machining - Bryden Surette, Precision Machining ‘23

Silver

  • Graphic Design - Talita Caballero Wang, Ivany Campus, Graphic Design student (also awarded the RBC Best of Region Award)
  • Photography (Post Secondary Level) - Carlos Moreno, Ivany Campus, Professional Photography student

Bronze

  • Cooking (Post-Secondary Level) - Sarah McLean, Akerley Campus, Culinary Management student
  • Heavy Vehicle Technology - Nicholas Sarion, Heavy Duty Equipment Repair ‘21
  • Mechanical Engineering CAD - Kyle McPherson, CAD Technician – Mechanical ‘22

“Skilled trades and technology play a critical role in our day-to-day lives, our economy, and our future,” says Robin Lorway, Acting Executive Director, Skills Canada Nova Scotia. “The Skills Canada National Competition provides a unique opportunity to not only see our province’s youth shine among the best skilled tradespeople in the country, but for those youth to see their talents and efforts recognized on the national stage.”
