Wind Turbine Technician program coming to NSCC Strait Area Campus

Apr. 07, 2025 – Media Release

Port Hawkesbury, NS – In response to the growing need for skilled workers in Nova Scotia’s wind sector, NSCC is launching a new Wind Turbine Technician program in September 2026. The first of its kind in Nova Scotia, the program will equip graduates with the skills needed to support the province’s goal of generating 50% of its electricity from wind energy by 2030.

The 1-year certificate program will prepare approximately 15 students to enter the growing wind sector. Students will learn how to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain wind turbine systems and components, ensuring wind turbines operate efficiently to produce clean energy.

“We’re thrilled to be offering this program at NSCC,” says Patty Charlton, Manager of Technology and Environment at NSCC. “With the growing need for skilled workers to install and maintain wind infrastructure, this training will provide students with hands-on experience they need to succeed and support the province’s clean energy goals.”

Wind turbine technicians are required to work in confined spaces, climb towers and ladders, work at heights of up to 125 meters, perform physically strenuous activities and work in all weather conditions in a loud, industrial environment. As part of the program, students will complete safety awareness courses and receive certifications from the Global Wind Organization (GWO), ensuring they are ready to work safely in the field.

Graduates of the Wind Turbine Technician program will be qualified to work in wind turbine technician jobs with a variety of employers, including wind turbine farms, independent power producers, original equipment manufacturers, third party service contractors and blade repair companies.
