Possible data breach involving student information
Jul. 10, 2023 – Statement
People Corporation, the company contracted to administer health and wellness programs at the College, informed NSCC on June 7, 2023 of a possible data breach involving personal information. This breach impacts approximately 6800 students who enrolled in the health and dental plan, or the myvirtualdoctor health care service offered through the College.
Information that was breached includes the College name, student name/College ID, date of birth and, in some cases, the student’s email. No employee information was affected by the breach (except for those few who are also students).
While there was no personal health information included in the breach, the breached data could potentially be used for fraudulent purposes, including identity theft. The company is currently not aware of any ongoing exposure or misuse of the breached information.
Students whose information was breached have been alerted by the College of the issue and sent an email and letter directly from People Corporation’s company - Gallivan. The letter will include details on how to access a free comprehensive credit monitoring service (myTrueIdentity) for one year.
