Courses in Carpentry programs

Each of our carpentry programs offers a wide range of learning through carpentry courses. You begin the academic year by learning about construction safety, then continue to develop skills you can carry forward into your career as a qualified carpenter. Courses may include topics like:

  • Exterior finishing
  • Construction safety
  • Hand and power tools
  • Construction estimating
  • Supports, beams and joists
  • Framing – exterior, interior and roofs

In addition to the skills and knowledge you gain through these courses and more, there is also a work experience component to your program. During your work term, you get to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom, on the job.

Recognizing prior learning / transfer credits

If you have prior learning (courses, employment, etc.) that's relevant to your carpentry program, you may be able to apply to earn credit. Not all NSCC programs are eligible. Learn about our recognizing prior learning (RPL) process.

After you graduate

Upon successful completion of your carpentry program and finding employment, you can choose to complete the provincial apprenticeship program and/or gain Red Seal endorsement.

Apprenticeship program

Register as an apprentice with Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) for an optional but beneficial carpenter apprenticeship experience that combines on-the-job learning with technical training.

Red Seal

Once you’ve completed the apprenticeship program, you’re eligible to write the inter-provincial exam for Red Seal endorsement. A Red Seal formally recognizes your skills and competency. Learn more about apprenticeship and Red Seal endorsement
