Carpentry programs
Nova Scotia needs skilled carpenters to construct and renovate in the housing, commercial and industrial construction markets.
Exploring colleges for carpentry? An NSCC carpentry program may be for you if you like practical, hands-on work, problem-solving, teamwork, and have good self-management skills and a strong work ethic.
Choose a carpentry program
We offer 4 carpentry programs that range from 6.5 months to 2 years, some with full-time and part-time options.
Learn basic carpentry skills and explore many areas of the carpentry trade, including safely constructing and installing wood products to national and local building codes, through a variety of courses in carpentry.
Earn a diploma in carpentry. Go beyond the basics and develop a solid carpentry skillset, including efficiency, sustainability, business skills, use of shop equipment, building science and more.
Courses in Carpentry programs
Each of our carpentry programs offers a wide range of learning through carpentry courses. You begin the academic year by learning about construction safety, then continue to develop skills you can carry forward into your career as a qualified carpenter. Courses may include topics like:
- Exterior finishing
- Construction safety
- Hand and power tools
- Construction estimating
- Supports, beams and joists
- Framing – exterior, interior and roofs
In addition to the skills and knowledge you gain through these courses and more, there is also a work experience component to your program. During your work term, you get to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom, on the job.
Recognizing prior learning / transfer credits
If you have prior learning (courses, employment, etc.) that's relevant to your carpentry program, you may be able to apply to earn credit. Not all NSCC programs are eligible. Learn about our recognizing prior learning (RPL) process.
After you graduate
Upon successful completion of your carpentry program and finding employment, you can choose to complete the provincial apprenticeship program and/or gain Red Seal endorsement.
Apprenticeship program
Register as an apprentice with Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) for an optional but beneficial carpenter apprenticeship experience that combines on-the-job learning with technical training.
Red Seal
Once you’ve completed the apprenticeship program, you’re eligible to write the inter-provincial exam for Red Seal endorsement. A Red Seal formally recognizes your skills and competency. Learn more about apprenticeship and Red Seal endorsement
