Employer spotlight: A Q&A with Shannex

Employers play a huge role in the NSCC student and graduate experience.

In addition to hiring NSCC graduates, students get real work experience with employers during work-terms and many of our programs are developed with industry partners.

Shannex is one of these employers. Vanessa White, Vice President of People and Culture at Shannex, shares why:

Tell us about your business and industry, and the areas you serve.

For more than 35 years, Shannex has grown as a trusted provider of accommodations, services, and healthcare for seniors. Currently, we offer a continuum of service options, including licensed nursing homes and retirement living communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario. We are a team of more than 5,900 compassionate, honest, professional Great People who foster safe, caring communities.

Approximately how many NSCC graduates do you employ?

We have a long history of working with NSCC through program support, work placements and recruitment, and we’re proud to have many NSCC graduates working across the organization. NSCC plays a huge role in supporting our success with graduates making a difference across the organization, from front-line service through the culinary centre and care delivery to corporate services. The biggest impact NSCC graduates have at Shannex, though, is providing service and care for our residents as Continuing Care Assistants and Licensed Practical Nurses.

As an employer, what skills or qualities do you look for when hiring?

We call our team members Great People, and they embody our guiding principles of being compassionate, honest, professional, and safe. When hiring and recruiting new talent, we look for these qualities, along with the required training and skills.

Why do you choose to hire NSCC graduates? What sets them apart from other applicants?

There’s a huge need for licensed long-term care and seniors’ accommodations in Nova Scotia. As one of the provincial government partners committed to building and operating new nursing home communities in the next three years, we’re working hard to recruit skilled healthcare professionals to join our team. We’re looking for dedicated and compassionate people interested in meaningful work where they make a difference every day, and we have found NSCC graduates are a great fit for our organization.

NSCC and its graduates play a big part in our success.

Is there anything you’d like to add?

We’re proud to be on the forefront of health care innovation at Shannex, and we see our trusted partnership with NSCC as an important part of how we will continue to lead the way to better living.

I’m happy to chat with anyone interested in a career with us – we’d love to have you.
