Campus housing expectations

On this page

Campus housing is more than a place to sleep and eat; it's a place to feel safe, secure and successful. When you live on campus, you're exposed to opportunities and experiences that create community, promote inclusivity and most of all, support your personal and academic success.

Community standards

Campus housing community standards and practices are a combination of guidelines and expectations of student and guest behavior in campus housing (also referred to as rules), and a non-academic student conduct process. By signing the Campus Housing Agreement, students agree to follow and abide by the campus housing community standards and practices as outlined in our Living on Campus Guide and supporting documentation.

Living On Campus Guide

Our NSCC Living on Campus Guide includes our foundational approaches to on-campus living and our community standards. The guide also outlines what to expect while living in campus housing at NSCC.

Preparing to live in campus housing

As you prepare to move to campus housing, it is important to know what you can and cannot bring on campus. View our campus housing checklist (PDF 103KB) for information on what to bring and for a list of items that are prohibited.

Living with others

The campus housing admission process includes assigning specific rooms and roommates to those who have accepted a housing offer and considers:

  • lifestyle preferences as indicated on your application (e.g. study habits, sleep habits, etc.),
  • roommate or suitemate preferences (if confirmed across all applications),
  • allergies (both environmental and dietary), and
  • additional special considerations.

All individuals living in shared spaces are required to complete a roommate agreement, even if you are living with people you have known for years. This document is provided, within the first month of each term, to each student sharing a space and can be changed or updated throughout the term.

In times of conflict, student roommates are encouraged to use the document to guide open, compassionate, and clear communication. Our community assistants can support campus students in navigating roommate agreements.

Prioritizing your health and wellness

Personal well-being is a key contributor to your success in both your studies, and campus housing experience. We offer a supportive living and learning environment with a range of student wellness services and resources to help you care for your mental health and physical wellbeing. For details on our wellness support, please visit the Wellness and counselling services webpage. There are limitations to the support we can provide, as noted in limitations and scope of care below.

Housing supports

Campus housing community assistants

Likely to be one of the first people you meet on campus, your well-trained housing community assistant (CA) is committed to building a sense of belonging within your campus housing and across the wider campus community. Selected for their strong leadership skills, your CA not only offers basic support to those living on campus, but they also develop educational and social opportunities and aid in the general security of our buildings.

Campus housing coordinators

Every campus housing location is assigned a coordinator. These are full-time NSCC employees who are responsible for the day-to-day administration of our campus living program. They work with other members of the student services team to support students, foster accountability and help build a positive and inclusive living and learning environment.

Resources and supports

In addition to the support provided by your campus housing team and your NSCC Student Association, we offer supports and services that help you get the most out of your NSCC experience. View the wide range of student services available to you.

Limitations and scope of care

In limited cases where a student exhibits complex behavioral or personal needs, NSCC campus housing may take action. Complex needs would include those that:

  • extend beyond the scope, services and expertise of what may be reasonably provided or accommodated by NSCC campus housing,
  • remain unchanged or the pattern of behavior escalates in severity. And where the:
    • student refuses to seek reasonable care or seek reasonable accommodations or solutions,
    • the students’ behaviors negatively impact the wellbeing of campus housing staff, other students, or the campus housing community, or
    • the student’s continued behavior places an individual at risk.

NSCC campus housing may take action that can include, but is not be limited to:

  • relocation or reassignment of campus housing room or suite (if available),
  • suspension from campus housing,
  • termination of the campus housing agreement,
  • restriction of future application to campus housing, or implementation of conditional requirements, communicating with emergency contacts as provided in the campus housing application.
