Introducing the SPRINT Fund

NSCC’s new SPRINT Fund empowers faculty and students to engage in impactful research with industry and community partners. Designed to foster innovation and skill development, this pilot program reflects NSCC’s commitment to collaboration and practical solutions.

SPRINT—Supporting Practical Research and Innovation through NSCC Talent—offers microgrants for applied research projects that address real-world challenges. With $30,000 available for the 2024-2025 cycle, this funding supports faculty and students eager to turn ideas into meaningful outcomes.

Driving collaboration and creativity

Director of Applied Research Alain Joseph explains the vision behind this new program, "The SPRINT Fund is about more than just funding innovative projects—it’s about fostering a culture of collaboration and creativity across the College. We want to ensure that everyone interested in research has the opportunity to get involved.”

Joanne Firth, Industry Liaison Officer, played a key role in launching the SPRINT Fund. With her strong connections to industry and deep understanding of their research needs, she serves as an invaluable resource for students and faculty seeking to collaborate with local companies. Joanne also emphasizes how the funding can be uniquely applied to benefit both students and faculty in different ways:

  • Students can use the funding for capstone projects or industry collaborations, which may count as their 5-week work placement with approval from their Academic Chair. The funding can be applied as a stipend or used to cover project supplies.
  • Faculty can leverage funds to support industry partnerships, such as building prototypes, accessing research tools or covering essential project expenses.
