Greenery cover in NS for climate resilience

Aerial map of an urban area.

Summary

Our geomatics researchers are mapping greenery cover across Nova Scotia, comparing green spaces to non-green surfaces like concrete to combat urban heating. This work identifies areas where greenery can be increased, providing a guide for future urban planning and green space development.

Challenge

In Canada, rising urban temperatures and the urban heat island phenomenon are serious concerns. As urbanization increases, the issue of urban heating becomes more severe, posing several risks to human health. One effective method to combat urban heating is through the expansion of greenery. The United Nations has highlighted the need for sustainability goals specifically for urban areas. Recognizing this, the Government of Nova Scotia aims to catalog greenery in the province’s urban areas.

Outcome

This project supports broader goals of enhancing ecological sustainability, improving public health and building resilient communities in the face of climate change and urbanization. The findings will inform future green infrastructure planning and development efforts in Nova Scotia.
