PALS Administrative Support Student

 Position Scope

Reporting to the Manager, Libraries and Learning Commons and under the day-to-day functional direction of the Learning Commons Coordinator, you will support the administrative work associated with the Peer Assisted Learning Support (PALS) program. PALS is an impactful peer-to-peer learning program that employs approximately 40 students a year who deliver peer-to-peer group study sessions, subject or course specific tutoring, workshops or webinars, and other peer-based learning supports with the aim of enhancing academic success and overall college preparedness.

General Duties

As the PALS Administrative Student, you will support the PALS program by providing administrative support, which can include:

  • Regular communication with all PALS providers, such as sending reminders about pay periods and monthly meetings.
  • Assistance with timesheets which includes ensuring all PALS providers have access to their paysheets and have submitted them accurately and on time.
  • Support in scheduling PALS sessions, including reserving classrooms for in-person PALS sessions.
  • Respond to emails and inquiries about the PALS program and make referrals to other NSCC services.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in a PALS orientation and monthly meetings, which includes training on learning and facilitation strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Learning Commons Coordinator and Manager, Libraries and Learning Commons to support the administrative needs of the PALS program.
  • Proactively communicate with the Manager, Libraries and Learning Commons and the Learning Common Coordinator as it relates to PALS delivery.
  • Promote available NSCC academic and learning resources, and support students in their usage.
  • Make referrals to appropriate Student Affairs team members or resources, as appropriate.
  • Support PALS providers in cancelling and rescheduling sessions, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Learning Program at NSCC, either full or part-time. Preference will be given to students currently enrolled in a program related to Business.
  • Positive, enthusiastic, team player.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Previous, relevant experience using computer applications such as Microsoft Office 365 (especially Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), video conferencing, instant messaging and enterprise level information systems.
  • Experience or an interest in learning and tutoring or working in a library setting.
  • Good judgment, including analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Initiative, and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Flexibility in performance of duties and ability to adjust schedule with limited notice.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Experience providing administrative support is considered an asset.

Hours of Work

2-8 hours per week, depending on demand. You must be available to participate in online and self-directed training sessions, as well as work evenings and occasional weekends.

Conditions of Employment

This position is required to work remotely. Personal computer with reliable Internet access; audio/microphone capability is required.

Wage

$17/hour (new PALS tutor)
$19/hour (returning PALS tutor)
