Orlando Butler-Hunt's Story

Orlando Butler-Hunt in Costa Rica in 2025

This recent trip to Costa Rica was a transformative experience that allowed me to immerse myself in the rich culture and traditions of the Indigenous Boruca community. I had the unique opportunity to learn about their customs, and it was fascinating to see how their way of life has adapted while still holding true to its roots. We were welcomed with open arms as we learned about their incredible art, and spiritual practices, which have played a significant role in shaping their identity over the centuries. What stood out most to me was the striking contrast and surprising similarities between the Boruca's traditions and our own. While their rituals and lifestyle are deeply connected to nature and community, I could see elements in their daily practices that mirrored our own. the importance of family, respect for the environment, and the value of sharing stories. Yet, their simple, sustainable way of living, which revolves around honoring the earth, was a sharp reminder of how disconnected we often are from the natural world in our fast-paced, modern lives. This trip also gave me a glimpse into the day-to-day life of Costa Ricans beyond the tourist spots. From the bustling markets to the peaceful countryside, I witnessed the warmth and resilience of the people, and I left with a profound sense of gratitude for the lessons I learned. This experience will stay with me forever, as it reminded me of the power of cultural exchange and the importance of embracing and understanding the world around us.
