Desiree Francis' Story

Desiree Francis in Costa Rica in 2025

What a wonderful time we had in Costa Rica. As nervous as I was to come, I’m so glad that I did. The “strangers” quickly became friends, and we made memories of a lifetime!

As I reflect, especially being in the Boruca community, it was a HUGE eye-opener. They welcomed us into their community and their homes with open arms. They showed us a true sense of connection within community, culture, language, and land. The conversations and teachings will stick with me forever, and I am incredibly thankful for that. Knowing that as indigenous peoples, we are all fighting the same fight—to keep our culture alive and stronger than ever!

There are a few things that I plan on bringing back with me into my home, within myself, and into my classroom, which include more learning and teaching our indigenous culture and language with the hopes of bringing in our elders from our community for the children to get to know while listening to their stories and teachings.
I want my kiddos to feel a sense of community and great pride when they say, “I am Indigenous!”
