Myranda Roy's Story

In March 2025 I was accepted to join diff erent indigenous students on a trip to Costa Rica. Completely changing my eating, sleeping and overall schedule for these 7 days changed my outlook on our diff erent cultures we have around us.
Starting with a whole diff erent style of living this wasn't like Canada and everything was just so diff erent. The weather was not like our 4 seasons, The buildings were all built diff erently and the new things we ate I never heard of. Traveling for our 6 hours to the Boruca People was an amazing sight from the trees, animals, and diff erent cars. We had a lot of break time on our way there but we made it there and back to the main city of San Jose.
Learning about the Boruca people was such an eye opening experience. Learning how to make Cacao (dark chocolate), mask making / carving, bracelet making, and listening to their experience with their culture and how it is also like us. As these people are trying to also recover their language and keep their culture pushing they are fi ghting just like the other nations within Canada. These people have their own teachings, dances and other activities just like us. I can most defi nitely bring back some of each culture back with me and take their learnings and create new things with it. Like artwork, more bracelets, dances, masks, etc.
Then having our own time within the trip in Quepos, I've really taken everything in. Me and two friends on this trip have traveled within Quepos taking yoga, trying new food, and just exploring the beaches and town. I really am grateful for this experience as I've created new bonds and learned more than one indigenous cultures on this trip. I hope to have this experience again and see these people again. Even if it's us going to them or them coming to us. This has been the most eye opening seeing I've ever had.
Wela’lin, Thank you.
