Grace Giles' Story

Grace Giles in The Netherlands in 2024

I recently returned from three unforgettable weeks attending the Doing Business in Europe program at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, Netherlands. Where I attended valuable lectures, went on unforgettable field trips, and collaboratively worked alongside other students from different parts of the world.

Biking in Groningen was a whole new adventure for me, including getting caught biking in a rainstorm coming home from school. Which resulted in me becoming soaked, however; I officially feel that I fit in with the Dutch! As an individual who has never spent much time on a bicycle, I was unsure what to expect with biking. I was over the moon when I received my bike and felt like I started to fit in with the Dutch culture. Over the course of my three weeks in Groningen, I cherished biking along the well-maintained bike paths that offered me a different lifestyle than back home in Nova Scotia. When it was time to return my bike, I had a new appreciation for the outdoors and the freedom I had in biking in Groningen.

Every Tuesday and Friday after classes, I would attend the local market to get freshly squeezed orange juice and fruit for the week. This quickly became part of my weekly routine, which allowed me to explore the city on foot and stumble upon the unique stores Groningen offered

As I reflect on the last three amazing weeks in Groningen, I now have lifelong friends spread across the world. From late-night karaoke nights to biking through the narrow streets, singing on our way home from supper, working as a team on assignments and so many more memories are shared with individuals across the world. This international learning experience has exponentially increased my self-confidence in my capabilities of critical thinking skills, travelling, and thriving in an unknown environment. These are all qualities that will benefit my career in the legal industry.

My three weeks at Hanze University in Groningen were a whirlwind of adventure, growth and new connections. This opportunity forced me to step out of my comfort zone and taught me the value of embracing new environments. Take this as your sign to embrace new adventures, even if the opportunity scares you. I promise you that you won’t regret it and to embrace the highs and lows of the opportunity.
