Carrie Johnson's Story

Carrie Johnson in Denmark in 2023

If you are on the fence about traveling internationally, here’s a little push to say “You can do it! Be adventurous!”. As a shy introvert I had an internal struggle with how I thought this experience could play out, trying to keep a positive outlook, but having worries about not being outgoing enough to enjoy the adventure. I am so happy to say it exceeded my expectations and was a beyond amazing experience. Everyone was warm and welcoming, and it was so great to see such a diverse group of people from different countries, ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles, coming together and just having such a phenomenal time.

The picture I chose to represent my time in Denmark is from our final “goodbye” supper. It is of myself (black dress and hair) and my dorm roommate on the trip, Johanna, from Finland. We really hit it off and had a lot of things in common, but she is much more outgoing, which worked well for us! The goodbye supper was very bittersweet because it was a lot of fun, (and a delicious traditional Danish meal), but it was also very sad to be saying goodbye to all our new friends! I learned a lot, not only about my area of study, but about different educational systems, other people, cultures, myself, and about Eurovision (being in a room with different competing countries was hilarious, what a blast 😊!).
