Take action
We're inspired by the important work happening by our alumni to bring awareness to systemic racism in Nova Scotia and beyond. Like many of you, we want to be a part of the necessary change.
Last summer, we engaged five alumni from the Black/African Nova Scotian and Indigenous/Mi’kmaw communities to share their messages and calls for action in a special edition email shared across our alumni and staff networks.

It Starts with Us
It Starts With Us is a community-led initiative dedicated to honouring the lives of MMIWG2S+ while shifting the narratives that often surround these tragedies. The project seeks to be independent of government and institutional funding, meaning your support is even more critical in making this possible. The Atlantic Scholarship Organization
This organization helps to remove financial barriers and other obstacles for students. In pursuit of their mission, they’ve established the Black Lives Matter Legacy Foundation Scholarships in support of BLM Atlantic Canada. Beyond providing financial support to Black students in the province, the fundraiser aims to bring more awareness to the lack of opportunities and discrimination faced by Black communities in our society.
NSCC Foundation
The NSCC Foundation is dedicated to helping students in financial need and improving access to education. NSCC Foundation and Alumni have worked with alum Chris Murdoch to establish a financial award for Black/African Nova Scotian students. Beyond financial support, the award aims to help combat stereotypes Black men and women face in the Nova Scotia music industry. Donate to the Chris Murdoch Pathways to Rock Award

Volunteer with We Will Win Youth Association
Alumnus Colter Simmonds founded the We Will Win Youth Association to bring young men together from rival communities to help stem community violence. The program has evolved to offer an outlet to both boys and girls and now brings youth and student-athletes together from all walks of life. Using sport as a means to teach valuable life lessons, 3WYA provides youth-at-risk with the opportunity to win at life.
Support Black and Indigenous business
Alumnus Lindell Smith has worked closely with A.C.C.E (Arts, Community, Culture, Economics), a self-funded network of young Black leaders from Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) – who individually – have roots from all of the historic Black communities in HRM. Their recent #BuyBlackHalifax Blackout Boxes initiative highlighted seven Black-owned businesses in an effort to increase engagement within the Black business community in Halifax.
