Discovering his career and purpose

After years of working jobs that offered little room for growth, Shane Lloyd knew there had to be more. The Dartmouth native found himself searching for a career where he could reach his full potential. When he discovered welding, everything changed. With guidance from his mentor, NSCC Welding faculty Frederick Crawley, Shane developed a plan to pursue his newfound passion at NSCC's Akerley Campus.

Shane chose NSCC's Welding program for its hands-on learning approach and strong industry connections. “The program pushes me to improve my skills with new projects while gaining a deep understanding of both the creativity and science behind the craft,” says Shane, explaining his appreciation for the program. “The instructors are a key part of what makes the program impactful by providing valuable feedback that helps me strengthen my technique and gain my confidence.”

Easing financial burdens, reaffirming passions

What he didn't expect or plan for as he set on this new path was the impact of becoming a recipient of multiple student awards. By receiving awards such as the Smart WIL Award, Wilfred G. Moore Welding Excellence Award, Black Empowerment to Success Award and the R.W.D. Mature Welding Student Motivation Award, Shane found the support he needed to fully focus on his studies.

"When I received the awards, I felt extremely grateful, and it gave me a sense of validation," Shane shares. "These awards made a huge difference during my time at NSCC by easing financial burdens and allowing me to focus more on my studies and personal development. They motivated me to continue striving for excellence in the program and reaffirmed my passion for welding."

Creating a legacy beyond the classroom

Now excelling in his program, Shane appreciates how each project brings new challenges that encourage problem-solving and growth. The combination of technical instruction and hands-on experience with advanced equipment has helped him build both skills and confidence. “NSCC has fostered a sense of community and connection, which helped me grow personally and professionally. The support, mentorship, and opportunities I received have shaped the path I'm on today and opened doors that may have never been possible,” says Shane.

Looking to the future, Shane plans to use his welding expertise to start his own business. More importantly, he wants to create opportunities for the next generation. "I would like to make a pathway for the younger generation of African Canadians," he explains, wanting to further the impact of the support he received.

“This program has opened doors and reminded me that everyone is capable of anything, and with the right assistance, dreams can become your reality," says Shane, giving advice to students like him. “Don't hesitate to apply for awards. Take the time to research the opportunities available to you. These awards can be life-changing."

Supporting NSCC students

To the donors who make these awards possible, Shane expresses his deepest gratitude: "Your contributions not only provide financial assistance, but also inspire and motivate students like myself to strive for excellence, and to have the foundation to succeed.”
