Meet Tuma Stevens
After working as a crane operator for the past seven years on some of the biggest developments in Cape Breton, Tuma Stevens is re-investing in his future through an education at NSCC.
Tuma, a multi-award recipient, will graduate from NSCC’s Business Administration Diploma in 2023. Through this program, he’s gaining the foundation needed to pursue future dreams of entrepreneurship and community leadership.
“Through the pandemic, the importance of having a solid education became clear to me. After being out of school for eight years and working for seven in a trade I love, it was a big leap of faith to enroll at NSCC, but I knew it was the right step to take to achieve my ultimate goals,” shares Tuma.
Tuma adds: “The instructors made this transition easy. Through my instructors I found mentors who have pushed me to keep going even when I doubted myself. Everything I’m learning at NSCC, I will apply it to future endeavors to help Membertou, my community, grow. It is my hope that I will inspire other Mi’kmaw people to continue their education to better themselves and their communities.”
When asked about the promise of the new Sydney Waterfront Campus, Tuma proudly gleams: “This campus will attract not just students, but staff, who want to be part of something great. Something world-class. The programs and experience are already top-notch. Finally, we will have the infrastructure to match.”
