RBC funding powers up wind energy education at NSCC
Expanding horizons in renewable energy training
NSCC is set to modernize its Electrical Technician program with a focus on large-scale wind energy, thanks to a significant donation from the RBC Foundation. This investment is part of a $2 million initiative supporting green skills development across Atlantic Canada's post-secondary institutions.
The two-year diploma program at Kingstec Campus, which currently emphasizes solar photovoltaic and small wind applications, will now expand to meet the growing demand for wind energy expertise.
"This funding will allow us to enhance the program's curriculum through new course development and hands-on training materials,” says Don Bureaux, President, NSCC. “RBC’s investment is ensuring our students are at the forefront of renewable energy technology."
Meeting Nova Scotia's energy goals
With the provincial government's commitment to increase onshore wind generation from 20% to 50% of total electricity by 2030, the demand for skilled wind technicians is soaring. The enhanced program will include one to two new courses on Wind Energy Fundamentals and the acquisition of two Nacelle Wind Turbine Training Systems, providing students with the opportunity to practice and refine the essential skills they’ll need in the field.

The program's adaptation aligns with the province's significant investments in hydrogen/ammonia projects that require substantial offshore wind energy installations. By responding to industry feedback and labour market demands, NSCC is positioning its graduates to play a vital role in Nova Scotia's low-carbon energy future.
This investment not only bolsters NSCC's capacity to deliver cutting-edge wind energy education but also contributes to both economic growth and environmental sustainability in the province.
