NSCC Sydney Waterfront Campus receives $100K to enhance hearing accessibility
Bridging the gap in hearing accessibility
Through NSCC Foundation and Alumni Relations, the College has received a $100,000 federal grant to enhance accessibility at the new Sydney Waterfront Campus, set to open in September 2024. Thanks to the grant from the Enabling Accessibility Fund, provided by Employment and Social Development Canada, the funds will be used to equip up to 50 campus spaces with MobileConnect units, cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the learning experience for students with hearing impairments.
Revolutionary technology for inclusive learning
The MobileConnect system will cover the majority of spaces in the new campus, including labs, classrooms, shops, community rooms, and the Elder on Campus room. This technology acts as a transmitter, allowing students with hearing aids or cochlear implants to connect directly to the sound system, enabling clear and engaging classroom discussions.
“Assistive listening technology is about providing equal access and inclusion for all students and staff, regardless of hearing ability," says Terrah Keener, Dean, School of Access, Education and Language, NSCC. "By increasing the number of rooms equipped with this technology, we are removing barriers to ensure that all students can fully participate in their learning.”
A step towards comprehensive accessibility
The implementation of the MobileConnect system aligns with NSCC's commitment to providing an inclusive learning environment. Implementing this technology is part of a broader effort to improve community and workplace accessibility at the College. Sydney Waterfront Campus is being built with the goal of achieving gold certification in accessibility standards through the Rick Hansen Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) program, requiring a rating score of 80% or higher.
With the support of funds like the Enabling Accessibility Fund to make accessibility improvements at NSCC’s campuses, the College can address the unique needs of its students so they can thrive in their education barrier-free.
