Back in community
The return of in-person events
The NSCC Foundation and Alumni Relations team is excited to be back to in-person events! This fall, the team has been busy with gift announcements, fundraising events and alumni engagement opportunities.
Celebrating the legacy of Archy Beals
In October, NSCC hosted a dinner and dance at NSCC’s Akerley Campus to celebrate Archy Beals and fundraise for the Archy Beals Legacy Award, an award created by NSCC employees Barbara Roberts and Deanna Mohamed to honour his 27 years of service at NSCC and his impact on African Nova Scotian communities across the province.
It was an exciting evening where attendees got to shop with community vendors such as Ovaafrique, Rhonda the Jam Lady, and Tricia Crawley Art. The vendors were followed by entertainment from Akerley Campus Principal Augy Jones, and speeches from NSCC President Don Bureaux and African Canadian Supports and Student Services Advisor, Barbara Roberts. The dinner was prepared by all African Nova Scotian Chefs in collaboration with Akerley Campus chefs and under the leadership of Academic Chair Godfrey Odinga.
Lastly, for an exciting end to the night, it was announced that the Jeannine Deveau Achievement Fund made a generous $200,000 gift to the Archy Beals Legacy Award.
NSCC Alumni Farm Fun Day at Noggins
In October, NSCC Alumni Relations invited alumni and their nearest and dearest to a Farm Fun Day at Noggins Corner Market. The sold-out afternoon was the first in-person alumni event in over two years, and the overwhelming interest from alumni was evident with graduates from Shelburne to Marconi campuses attending. This was the first of many upcoming events that offer low-to-no-cost activities for alumni and friends to connect.
Margaret Mary Cook Dedication Event
The late Margaret Mary Cook left a $2 Million estate gift to fund student awards in perpetuity at NSCC’s Strait Area Campus through the Margaret Cook (nee Boucher) and Dr. David Cook Bursary. To honour her dedication to NSCC students, the Campus hosted an event to unveil its learning common's name change to the Margaret Mary Cook Learning Commons. It was a special afternoon at the Campus to host David Cook and Margaret’s friends to celebrate her generosity and kindness. To learn more, read the full media release for the event.
