Madyson Smith's Story

Madyson Smith in The Netherlands in 2024

At the beginning of my travels to the Netherlands I was very excited and nervous since it was my first time traveling abroad. I did not know what to expect when I got there since everything was so new to me of seeing a different culture outside of Canada. It was also my first-time flying by myself with  my friend, where I am used to traveling in Canada and being with my family.

Through this journey I am very happy to have had the opportunity and experience of being able to meet new people from different backgrounds and cultures to be able to share our stories from where we live. It was also nice to be able to go out at night with the friends that I made to be able to get to know one another more. Where we went to the Dom to have dinner and watch the galaxy show, go to the bar to watch UK football, and go to restaurants for dinner. It was also nice to be able to learn and grow more on my skills on learning how to run a multi-national business in a stimulation game where we competed in five groups and how we each had a role we took in our business. Where it showed us how to think and analyze situations that may happen in the business through the years. It also showed me how in the Netherlands they value collective learning than individual learning.

During my stay there I was able to see how their transportation was different from Canada’s, where they had train stations all over the country where it was easier to get from one place to another from driving, as well as how they biked more than drove. I also had the opportunity to go to Oldenburg and Utrecht when I had the weekend off to be able to see more of Europe when I was down there. Where I got to go on a paddle boat in one of the canals, go visit the largest castle, and climb the tallest tower in the Netherlands. Through this experience I am happy that I was able to go and to be able to get out of my shell more and to see how some of my skills improved a little bit from “Doing the business in Europe” program.
