$250,000 gift from Horizon Maritime to support Mi’kmaq learners pursuing healthcare careers at NSCC
Bridging the gap in healthcare education
Thanks to a generous $250,000 donation from Horizon Maritime, NSCC is set to launch the DGHF-Horizon Maritime Mi'kmaq Learners Healthcare Bursary. This initiative, announced at the Dartmouth General Hospital, aims to support Mi'kmaq learners across Nova Scotia pursuing careers in healthcare.
The bursary program will offer five annual $3,000 bursaries, one for each of the five Mi'kmaq territory districts in Nova Scotia: Kespukwitk, Sipekne'katik, Eskikewa'kik, Unama'kik, and Aqq Piktuk. These bursaries are renewable for up to three years, providing sustained support throughout students' education.
Fostering diversity in healthcare
This initiative aligns with the shared vision of Dartmouth General Hospital and Horizon Maritime to build diversity and inclusion within the healthcare sector. By investing in Mi'kmaq learners, the program aims to create a more representative healthcare workforce in Nova Scotia.
"This gift will indeed make that difference for Mi'kmaq learners pursuing a career in healthcare for years to come, and we are so grateful to Horizon Maritime for their generosity." Says Don Bureaux, President, NSCC.
A collaborative effort for change
The bursary program represents a collaborative effort between NSCC, Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, and Horizon Maritime to address the need for diversity in healthcare and remove barriers for Mi’kmaq students to pursue healthcare careers in Nova Scotia.
