Top 10 Highlights from 2022
Your talent, accomplishments, and unwavering acts of kindness continued to inspire us this past year. We loved sharing your stories and learning more about what matters most to you. It felt great to get back to in-person events like our Fun Farm Day and Convocations. Stay tuned for more in-person offerings, plus new ways to connect with NSCC and each other. Here’s a glimpse of some highlights from this wonderful and growing alumni community in 2022!
After a year of virtual offerings, and campus celebrations, we wrapped NSCC’s 25th Anniversary. Alumni, students, staff, and partners came together to celebrate in initiatives such as the virtual launch event, the ‘How it Started, How it’s Going’ social media contest, the launch of a digital photo collection, the 25th Anniversary Fund, and our 25-Minute Learning series. This year, we were able to safely return to in-person convocations. We celebrated and welcomed over 4,500 resilient and dedicated graduates across Nova Scotia. Get to know the newest members of our community through the Convocation highlights and by searching our #RadNewGrad hashtag on Facebook and Instagram.
After two and half years, we held our first in-person event at Noggins Corner Market in October. The sold-out afternoon hosted graduates from Shelburne to Marconi campuses along with their guests. Keep an eye on our events page for updates on more affordable and exciting events happening province-wide.
Whether you’re a new grad or established alumni, we want to make sure you’re getting the most from your Alumni Program. This fall, we launched the NSCC Alumni Program 101 video series, highlighting alumni-exclusive benefits, ways to stay connected, and advice from partners and grads. Watch the series on our YouTube channel.
As alumni you continue to leave a legacy. In the last year alone, your alumni community has collectively given over $60,000 to support NSCC students. You helped us exceed our Giving Tuesday goal in November with a total of $25,000 raised to support the Rapid Response Fund. Thank you for your ongoing generosity! You can learn more about your impact or donate to the Rapid Response Fund online.
NSCC is committed to accessible education and that means sustainable, affordable housing to support learning at the College. With a $112 million investment from the Province, NSCC will welcome over 350 students to campus housing at Akerley, Pictou and Ivany campuses by 2025. Learn more about the College’s new housing build.
NSCC alumni continue to shape the workforce, communities, and future of our province. The College’s annual Report to the Community shares snapshots of stories that demonstrate the tangible and lasting impact that our community has on Nova Scotia. This year we saw hype for grads like, Laura Roy (Music Arts ‘12), who was nominated for two GRAMMYs and a JUNO Award for her contributions on Doja Cat’s Planet Her album. Ryan Massiah (ALP ‘04 & Business Admin ‘06) who is building not-for-profit schools for children in his home community in Barbados in cooperation with the United Nations. Stephanie Jolie, whose first feature film, Night Blooms, hit big and small screens across the country.
Providing supports and promotion for alumni entrepreneurs is one of our priorities. Some of this year’s initiatives included a campaign to sell and giveaway NSCC alumni gift boxes filled with local items from alum-powered businesses. The new Start-Up Accelerator program welcomed its first cohort of alumni learners. We held our 7th Annual Shop NSCC Alumni list, a gift guide featuring alumni makers and business owners, and 12 Days of Giveaways. We look forward to offering more opportunities and value for our alumpreneurs in the year ahead. If you haven’t already, let us know about your business!
We invited Good Dear Good (Music Arts '17-18), Music Art students, ASL interpreter, Starla Predham (Deaf Studies '20 & ASL/English Interpretation '22), and NSCC President Don Bureaux to help us spread some holiday cheer. Missed it? Check out the festive and cheeky video online.
