NSCC Accessibility Advisory Committee – Applications Open

Five people in a circle have their hands on top of one another.

Applications are now open for NSCC’s Accessibility Advisory Committee until December 6, 2024. To support our equity priorities, the College launched the Accessibility Advisory Committee in 2021 to work towards systemic change in accordance with NSCC’s Accessibility Plan

The Accessibility Advisory Committee will:

  • Advise on the preparation, implementation, and effectiveness of NSCC’s accessibility plan.
Contribute to reviewing and updating the College’s accessibility plan at least every three years, in accordance with the Act.
  • Consult with stakeholders on accessibility in the organization.
  • Identify and advise on the accessibility of existing and proposed services and facilities.
  • Advise and make recommendations about strategies designed to achieve the objectives of NSCC’s accessibility plan.
  • Receive and review information from staff, senior leaders and, in particular, the Accessibility Steering Committee, and make recommendations, as requested.
  • Assist in monitoring compliance with government directives and regulations.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee shall be comprised of six to eight members as follows:

  • At least four persons with disabilities or delegates from organizations that represent people with disabilities, including:
    • at least two students or alumni with disabilities, or delegates from organizations representing students or alumni with disabilities.
    • at least two employees with disabilities, or delegates from organizations representing employees with disabilities.
  •  Up to four students, employees or community members with disabilities which may include family members, educational professionals and advocates.
  • The Senior Advisor, 2SLGBTQ+ and Persons with Disabilities, Senior Lead, is an ex-officio member of the Accessibility Advisory Committee.
  • The Vice President, Equity and International is the Executive Sponsor of the Accessibility Advisory Committee.

At least one half of the members of the advisory committee must self-identify as having a disability or represent an organization that represents people with disabilities. In accordance with the operating principle of First Voice, special consideration will be given to applicants for appointment who self-identify as having a disability, with due consideration for intersectionality.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee shall meet three to four times per year in order to fulfill its duties as outlined in NSCC’s Accessibility Plan.

To accommodate diverse geographical representation, meetings shall be held virtually, in accordance with NSCC’s Inclusive Event Guidelines. Committee members and other meeting attendees and guests may request accommodations including assistive devices and technology, translation and interpreting services, and accessible facilities, etc. to support full participation of all members.

Members of the Accessibility Advisory Committee shall be appointed for a term of two years and may be renewed for a maximum of two terms.

Applications are due December 6, 2024, and a selection committee will then review the applications and make decisions regarding membership.
