The Opportunity

We are looking for a Field Safety Specialist to join our Health & Safety team. Reporting to the Senior Safety Specialist, you will join a team of Field Safety professionals at our Halifax location where we offer you a Hybrid work option. The successful candidate is responsible to apply the appropriate measure of direction and support based upon Nova Scotia Power health and safety and objectives. You will work with field and corporate office personnel to improve safety performance. You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives. 

Key Elements of this role include:

  • Work toward an integrated approach to safety through continuous improvement of systems and processes
  • Support roll out of strategic safety initiatives including Serious Injury & Fatality (SIF) prevention, focusing on STKY (stuff that can kill you) and psychological health and safety
  • Work closely with management and the IBEW in developing Safe Work Practices
  • Act as a Liaison with regulatory agencies
  • Perform field safety Observations, and provide feedback to the field
  • Measure the compliance of your assigned operating area with the requirements of the Safety Program through auditing
  • Provide coaching & advise on safety related issues to all levels of the business
  • Ensure the Safety Program meets or exceeds regulatory requirements
  • Assist Managers, Supervisors and frontline employees understand and apply interpretations of safety regulations, policies, and rules
  • Provide technical advice as it relates to safety
  • Track safety performance and identify trends, communicate trends with supervisors in your area facilitate meetings concerning safety initiatives
  • Provide and develop safety related education to meet your customer’s needs
  • Attend management team meetings to ensure a consistent message is delivered
  • Assist JOHSC Investigation teams in determining immediate and root factors associated with an incident and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented
  • Work with other utilities and industries to improve safety in the workplace

Qualifications

  • As the ideal candidate you will possess a degree/diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or related fields of work.
  • You must have a demonstrated passion for safety and experience working with world class safety programs.
  • You must be a self-motivator with demonstrated experience working independently.
  • You also have several years’ experience working in an industrial environment preferably with the transmission and distribution of an electrical utility.
  • A CRSP / CRST designation or working towards it would be considered a definite asset.
  • This position calls for exemplary relationship building, communication, and motivational skills.
  • You will build and maintain working relationships with teams within Nova Scotia Power and its operating areas. The successful applicant has demonstrated their effectiveness as a team leader and easily crosses organizational boundaries to work effectively as part of an integrated team.
  • You are confident in your ability to make the right decision.
  • You must possess a current, valid driver’s license and be willing to travel within and outside the province as required. The preferred applicant should be willing to relocate if needed.
