Boil Water Advisory for Marconi Campus and Cape Breton University

Sep. 19, 2023 – Media Release

Sydney, NS -- A Boil Water Advisory (BWA) has been issued for the areas served by the NSCC Marconi Campus Sydney Water Treatment System. This includes the NSCC Marconi Campus, Cape Breton University, and the Cape Breton Health and Recreation Complex.

The water at Marconi Campus is tested daily for residual chlorine and weekly for bacteriological issues. Today, when we received results for bacteriological issues, we were notified that a water sample taken yesterday tested positive for total coliform.

Due to water quality concerns and the possibility of unsafe water, consumers are advised to boil all water for at least 1 minute, after it reaches a rolling boil, before drinking, preparing infant formulas, preparing juices and ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking, dental hygiene or any other activity requiring human consumption. This must be done until further notice.

The College is following all standard procedures for treating water contamination, as outlined by the Department of Environment and Climate Change, and the Department of Health and Wellness. We are investigating the cause of the contamination.

The BWA will be lifted as soon as we receive two successive clear reports and approval from the Department of Environment and Climate Change. Please know safety is our top priority.
