October 24, 2008 – Media Release
Dartmouth, NS - Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) will celebrate its fall graduating Class of 2008 during a convocation ceremony at NSCC Akerley Campus, today, Friday, October 24, 2008 beginning at 4 pm.
The ceremony recognizes the achievement of 201 graduates from eight campuses across Nova Scotia who will be awarded diplomas and certificates. This event also acknowledges the support graduates receive from family and friends as well as NSCC faculty and staff on their academic journeys.
This year's valedictorian is Gabe Welsh, who studied heavy construction at NSCC's Dexter Institute. This unique program is offered in conjunction with Dexter Construction to meet a growing demand for skilled heavy-construction workers. The partnership provides students with traditional classroom training they need, along with practical paid work experience on-site with Dexter Construction. Successful completion of the program comes with a job offer from Dexter's. "I finished my training on a Friday and was working by Monday," says Welsh. "Knowing my success at NSCC would earn me a job with Dexter Construction really kept me motivated through the two years of my program."
Today's graduation of 19 Medical Laboratory Technologists will mark the end of a unique, five-year training partnership between NSCC and the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC). In that time, a total of 75 Medical Laboratory Technologists have been trained for the province of Nova Scotia. Students were chosen by NSCC, and the two colleges worked together to develop a curriculum that would allow students to do their coursework at NBCC and their clinical experience at labs in Nova Scotia
"This has been a real model of collaboration," says Kelly McKnight, Projects Director with NSCC's School of Health and Human Services. "It really represented a unique opportunity for both colleges to assist the province of Nova Scotia meet a severe health human resource shortage in the Medical Laboratory Technology area. We look forward to future partnerships with NBCC."
The Medical Laboratory Technologist program was reintroduced at NSCC's Waterfront Campus in Dartmouth in September 2007. The first class will graduate in June 2009.
